Hi From Haiti

God Continues to supply !

Today was quite a day for us…receiving MUCH which allows us to distribute MUCH!

The Staff here at Sherries all received tents for themselves and their families, which is so important as virually all of them lost their homes.

One young man approached me tonight and asked me to pray for the rain to hold off.  He said, ”Haiti’s not ready for rain yet.” So we prayed.   This same young man told me how much it meant to him that Mike Nichols and Andrew Waites came to find him when they arrived to make sure he was ok.  This young man had lost much.  He is now working with us as an interpreter / guide  / friend!

Mr. Munford , one of Christian Light’s AMAZING  School teachers, and I rode with the World Vision food distribution coordinator today. He was checking out  areas of the city to make sure everyone had access to food distribution somewhere.  It was great to understand the system and to be able to help others know where to find the food that the larger NGOs are giving out.

On the way home Emory called and Iwas able to intercept him on the way to Dorothy’s place.  We spent time there with some folks from Operation Blessing as they brought Dorothy lots of good stuff for her kids.  They were able to spend time holding babies and filming aspects of the work she is doing there. They had the kids draw pictures and write stories of the quake.  They will be able to use these to raise attention and support for Haiti.

Lots of goods arrived today gallons of water, boxes of rice, tents, blankets, baby food…really good stuff!

Spent time at Quiskaya Chapel looking at their water system and trying to determine is a purification syustem would suit their well.

Mike Eunice continues to amaze us … all the block for the wall is finished, the latrines are built ands ready to have an out-house placed over them,  the shower stalls are complete and tomorrow should be ready to use….

The well on Sherries property is producing much more water as Mike uses it more and more.  He explains that the more it pumps out it makes more room for the water to flow in…pumping out the sand and impurities and the clean water flows in…could preach couldn’t it?

Joette Grimes is playing musical chairs with the kids as they sing “lean on me when you’re not strong.”   She is a wonder of compassion and joy.  and John her son is the go-to guy to get it done.  Thank  God that He worked it out for them to get here.

Mike Little  is here with us as well. Mike is an engineer…this evening one of the neighbors asked me to provide him with a tent.  I could not. Then I thought about it and 20 minutes later after Mike inspected his house and found it to be structurally sound, he joyously moved back in…no longer afraid of the superficial cracks in the stucco.  I could not give him a tent but Mike gave him back his house!

So it grows dark and i am thankful that the day of labor is nearly over…God does what we can not and we cooperate with Him to do what we can..

I am looking forward to a bucket bath and sound sleep in the “star light” hotel!  Thanks to all of you who are making it possible for much needed aid and love to reach this Country .  Please pray for those who work so hard at the Market Place while I am away.

Loving in your names and in the name of Jesus!

A typical day in Haiti…
Feb 3rd, 2010 by Kathy

Our typical day in Haiti:

Basically our days followed a quasi routine of waking up to the sounds of kids singing the earth quake song ( a really catchy,  newly inspired tune)  We were exceedingly blessed with hot coffee made on a gas stove. Children rolling up their outside bedrolls and taking turns inside changing, brushing teeth, washing faces.  The teachers would begin arriving and we would meet together to strategize, pray , worship together for a few minutes.

Please understand that this is now a construction site / school / orphanage / relief aid and food distribution institution.  Otherwise known as Christian Light School .  Sherrie Fausey is the Director and is one amazing (if not somewhat stubborn)red head!

The school children then began to arrive and the cooks made sure everyone had a bowl of porridge, some peanut butter bread or something to eat.

The medical team would have left at sun up to set up clinic and begin seeing patients. They took care of a staggering number of people with gaping wounds, burns, fractures, infections….headaches, bellyaches and the one that broke us in two, heartache!

Once school was started under the tarps around tables set up in the yard, the cooks and nannies began packing up the food packages. Creating packages out of whatever we had gathered the day before….rice, beans, peanuts, spaghetti, flour, cookies..whatever kind souls had given us at the airport or what ever boxes of rice sent from here had arrived.

At 10 am we would begin to distribute.  Each tent community in our area had been asked to form a committee of three people and bring a list of all the families. From that list we get a grand total of the number of people they were providing food for.

SO in folks would come and we would offer them a seat and ask about how their community is doing.

If there were unknowns about the community , we’d say, ok , show me, let’s go for a walk. And off we’d go for a visit.

Once in the commmunity we discuss the program with all that are there and talk about the role of the three comittee members for being responsible to bring food in and distribute it.  This keeps everyone honest.

This system seems crude , yet it really seems to work.

The most imporant factor is the visiting in each tent city ( community) by doing so we can see if there are any folks with medical needs and really look people in the eye and let them know they are not alone and they matter to us…to God and to the rest of the world.

Many times we’d have other small NGOs, like ourselves arrive with empty trucks that we could help fill, and Haitian Pastors that had taken on the burden of caring for hundreds when they themselves had nothing.  So we would fill them up with the supply we had.  It was a great honor to be a small part of this supply line!

After all the goods were gone, we’d shut down distribution and head back to the airport to search for a supply for the next day.  THis involved checking to see if any more Rice boxes had arrived from Georgia through MFI, walking the length of the airport camps and “begging” for supplies from international camps set up along the way.

Head back to camp and join the kids and staff..and whatever unpredictable situations waited for us there!

As night falls, the kids gather their mats back outside under the tarp and spend 30 minutes singing (once again we hear the earthquake tune) and praying, they all press faces to the ground and beseech the God who loves them so to keep them safe through the night and help their beautiful Nation recover from this calamity of epic proportions. And He hears.

Notes from Haiti:Kathy
Jan 31st, 2010 by Kathy
  • Problems are big, but i must simply do the next small thing right.
  • People are as desperate for Hope, Compassion and  Honor as they are for rice and beans.
  • The most Powerful commodity any of us  have to give is what is in our Hearts.
  • Food, water, clothes, tents and money given with HONOR  and COMPASSION have the power to heal souls as well as strengthen bodies.
  • This has been a worldwide event, the saving of Haiti. I repeatedly told the Haitian momas and children how the airplanes coming to bring aid were so thick in the sky that some had to be turned back for a while. Haiti the world sees you !
  • I watched strong Haitian Pastors collapse into the arms of missionaries and weep as they finally got to let go of their own sorrow over lost loved ones.
  • I listened to Fransiscot tell the harrowing tale of going back into the shaking house to get his brother and friend only to discover minutes later that Peterson, his younger brother , didn’t make it out alive.
  • I had a frail ten year old girl on the street offer me half of the cookie she had just stood in line an hour to receive.
  • watched the children sleep under the stars, side by side , comfortable on mats , they have each other… yet every single one wanting a mom of their own.
  • Watched an Argentine soldier holding Vidlan, Sherries 15 lb   3  year old…smiling and sharing a bottle of water.
  • The young mom /photographer from New york in her single tent in the middle of the field, brokering food deals for strangers, so food would move off the tarmac and into hungry bellies.
  • Long time Missionaries that went from tent to tent, kneeling down,  hugging, praying, weeping, giving.
  • Money sent so planes can fly and pallets can land and tents be distributed so rain won’t take the remnant of civilization that has survivied the loss of roof and walls.
  • Nurses and Doctors caring for  wounds days deep in infection.  Burns meticulously cleaned and  slathered in silvadene cream, while the screaming child just can’t understand.
  • So many beautiful people Haitian, German, Mexican, Canadian, American, Indian, Austrailian, French, Itailian ….working tirelessly together.
  • There is Hope for our World.  The beauty of our Humanity remains in tact!

Kathy and Martha should be returning from Haiti today and hand the baton back to Beaver who will head out in a few days.

Yesterday I got a call from Beaver to let me know that the meals built by Saint Simons Community Church and Kids Against Hunger have arrived and will be distributed today!!  Thank you again to these two ministries and everyone else who has helped make this possible!

I don’t think this will really surprise anyone but yesterday Kathy lead an armored UN convoy with 6000lbs of food to Sherrie’s where they donated it to us to distribute as we see fit….and there is likely to be more coming…as Beaver would say… HOLY HOLY!!

The method our team is using to identify the needs in the communities and to distribute aid to those people has been drawing a lot of attention because of the way in involves and connects with the Haitian people and because of its SUCCESS!  We have received word that several groups (including some pretty big ones!) would like for us to be responsible for delivering the supplies they are able to make available because of their confidence in the effectiveness and integrity of the system we have going…what favor we have received by working according to God’s logic instead of the world’s…again…HOLY HOLY!

Ok…alot has happened:

The group has been feeding over 1000 people every day from their compound in addition to having class for the kids, working with medical clinics in the area, and walking the ravine to care for needs there as well.  They are also able to distribute food to families in the area with the help of the teachers from Sherrie’s school.

Their system has been so successful and Kathy said she has been overwhelmed with how well the Bride, the body of believers, has been working together and how smooth things have been going…she said the Bride definitely has her boots on!!  The combination between people working there and here according to the Kingdom mentality is why we have been able to see so much accomplished.

We have been blessed with the donations of large amounts of Kids Against Hunger rice, a nutritionally complete meal that can be prepared almost anywhere thanks to the hard work of Chad and Christy Robbins.  Thanks to your generous donations we have been able to transport that rice, many needed medical supplies, and several teams of useful personnel to Haiti in the day since the earthquake.  More is needed, more is being provided, and more will continue to go which is why your continued support is both greatly needed and appreciated.

The work of our teams has been so effective that it drew the attention of other groups and the U.N. itself.  Everyone wants to know how we have been able to get so much done…they don’t understand the power of operating in FAITH and in the SPIRIT!!  Kathy and some of the team had the opportunity to share thoughts with some of those in powerful positions and we ask you to pray for continued enlightenment for those working with so many resources at their disposal that God will reveal to them ways to help that include and empower the Haitian people.

Taylor, Adam, JT, and Kelly have returned and Kathy and Martha remained in Haiti.  Emory, Mike, Ronnie, and Ken have been down a couple of days.

Natasha Taylor is also back in the states after helping to escort many Haitian orphans to Orlando and then Miami to be united with their adopted families in the states under humanitarian parole.  Please keep her in your prayers as she rests and looks ahead to what God would like her to do next to help and support in this crucial time.  Also, keep the children and their families in your prayers.  Included in the group were Isna from Faith Hope Love Infant Rescue (Dorothy’s) and Issac who is Natasha’s nephew.

We were able to connect a team of two ER nurses and a CNA/lab tech (who happens to be Haitian and can translate) with great needs in Haiti outside our immediate compound and have several other teams who are making preparations to go in the coming weeks.

Thank you again for all your love, prayers and support…please continue all three as we have only just begun to address the needs our Haitian brothers and sisters will have in the times ahead.

words from Natasha Taylor, still in Haiti with Dorothy Pearce and the children and staff of Faith Hope Love Infant Rescue:

So this morning we woke up to a 6.1 earthquake. the strongest aftershock for sure. again the Lord has his covering over us. and we are fine… still rebuking the spirit of fear as our God is not a God of fear.

yesterday we went out and were able to find kerosine, diesel fuel, and propane. PRAISE THE LORD!!! the only thing we didn’t run across was gas for the car… but i believe that will be accessible soon. the Lords provision is so abundant. we also went to sherrie’s and saw Kathy Brooks and the team from Much Ministries. they had a box of formula for us. then after we got back home we had a surprise from keziah in the office….more formula, a few antibiotics, toilet paper and more…God is always providing. today we are praying for a water truck to fill out cistern.

it was so wonderful to see mama kathy and taylor yesterday…i have only cried for a brief moment on wednesday night and then i got teary eyed when i hugged both of them. i know i have much to cry and grief over…all the things i have seen, all the tragedy, all the hurting people, all the ones lost, so much…but right now i cant…its too fresh and with after shocks continuing to be happening i’m just taking one day at a time.

we officially have 3 nannies staying with us because they are homeless now. 2 with their children. Rosie, her daughter injured her foot…so we are at a clinic in the neighborhood to get it re-bandaged and to find out if we can put her on some antibiotics.

well keep praying as Haiti needs the world right now…for people to come together with them and rebuild…to bring about a new nation filled with justice, beauty, health, provision….restoration. i believe this is the time…time for Haiti to start over and become a nation not know to be impoverished, but to be full of life and hope!!!

thanks for everything you are doing…whether its raising money, coming here, praying, singing, praising God, reading and being educated, telling others…whatever your part of the body it is good….for God makes all things work together for those that love Him….

blessings
Natasha

Kathy was able to walk “the Ravine” today which is an area where shacks have been built against a wall near where the sewer drainage runs.  This is the area where many of the families that Dorothy and Sherrie work with come from.  For the most part it appears that this area has stood through the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks!  Mesi Jezi!!!  Kathy and the men from the team were able to walk through and connect with families, check on those needing care, and give out LOTS of food!  I am hoping to talk to Kathy tonight and hear more about what happened on that walk.  To walk the Ravine on any given day was a life changing thing, no matter how many times you had done it before.  The beauty and pain that eyed you, called your name, and ran alongside and grabbed your hand along that path was more than any words or photograph could ever capture.  To do it today…wow.

We have received word that Pastor A and his family are okay!!  We also have word that Laura Lynn made it into Port and is at Sherrie’s now.  Everyone returned good reports after the most recent aftershock as well!   Beaver has returned and is working on coordinating all the support and volunteers into the best and most useful places.  Thank you to everyone who has been so faithful!!!
