Desmond Tutu famously said that there is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time. When you consider how to make a difference in a really challenging situation, sometimes you take a lot of little bites and sometimes you take big bites.
Small bites over many years:
2nd Story Goods
2nd Story Goods is taking small bite after small bite of the Elephant of generational poverty. To date, we celebrate 500,000 items sold! Talk about a lot of bites. Over 200 shop owners across the US continue to place orders. People like you continue to purchase from the 2SG website. Over 12 years millions of dollars have entered the Haitian economy through the hands of 2SG artisans.
This is not charity, it is commerce, an economic engine that keeps artisans working, feeding their families, buying materials to improve their homes, and starting other businesses to create more jobs. As we all partner together the job gets done and what looked impossible years ago continues to happen in a most difficult circumstance.
ProLead
What about the Elephant of political and civil unrest?
ProLead develops the men and women that are the future of Haiti. These newly trained ProLead coaches are not playing. Over 60 ProLead graduates applied for the 7 new coaching positions that opened this year. They know the stakes are high. They believe ProLead is the primary legacy of MUCH in Haiti. I have to agree. In the face of extreme resistance, over 2,500 ProLead graduates are forging a culture of solutions. Over 20% of these graduates are now business owners.
Marketplace gonaives
Market Place Gonaives was a big bite! And there were times when I thought we might choke! Yikes! Do you remember when we had to demolish most of the walls because they did not pass the seismic test? Then there was the failed expectations of the grocery store. MUCH chewed on that bite for several years. Just a few months ago MPG was transferred to local Haitian businessmen and women, including long-time associates of MUCH. They are committed to the growth of this asset and the health of the city of Gonaives. Truly, little by little and not giving up hope has seen this city-changing project come full circle!
The Elephant is getting eaten. Together we have accomplished much. Your faithful contributions enable MUCH here in the States and the team in Gonaives to continue to pedal. Just as parents remove the training wheels MUCH has passed the batons of leadership and responsibility to the MUCH team in Gonaives. They are the best ones to be in leadership. We remain committed to lending our strength when and where it helps most. I wish it were all self-sustaining. But the political and civil insecurity make this road a steep path.
MarketPlace Gonaives
Leader Solutions is finding its way. Talk about taking bites of an elephant. There are so many places here in the States where Leader Solutions could impact barriers to thriving. We are excited to have received invitations to work with various organizations impacted by “poverty thinking”. Knowing the importance of the formative months and years of ProLead encourages me to not rush the process. Little by little is the best way to grow. If it can work in Haiti, I believe it can work anywhere.
I have encountered some who only believe the news reports about Port au Prince and it is discouraging to be sure. Port au Prince is the Elephant in the room, but there are many others in the room that are heroes. They seldom make the news, but they continue to choose the path of life. We must not let go of the rope now.
We need your prayers and financial support. This Giving Tuesday, choose MUCH and stand with them.
Together we can continue to do great things.
All the love,
Kathy and Beaver Brooks
